SMCC Alumn Donates Great Lakes Chart

SMCC Alum Donates Great Lakes Chart
Posted on 10/19/2017
Ron Opfer '80Ron Opfer, a 1980 SMCC graduate, donated and installed a custom Great Lakes nautical chart in Sandusky Central Catholic School's middle school Ohio history class. Ron creates the charts as part of his Great Lakes Chart Initiative. The Initiative seeks to teach kids about the often overlooked importance of the Great Lakes as a valuable, but threatened, resource. The charts can be used in a variety of scholastic disciplines including social studies, history, geography, environmental studies, and even science and math. Initially, SCCS teacher Mr. Chip Shope plans to use the charts for his history lessons focusing on the War of 1812, in which the Great Lakes played a significant role. Ron was happy to return to his alma mater to help kids learn more about a subject he is passionate about. More information about the Great Lakes Chart Initiative can be found at greatlakeschartinitiative.org.
