College Representative Visits to St. Mary Central CatholicHigh School

Why are College Rep Visits important?

College reps work in the admissions office of the college oruniversity. The rep who visits SMCC is quite often the person who reads andreviews applications from students.

Many colleges keep track of any contact the student has madewith the college and factor this into the admission decision because it showsthat the student is serious about attending the school if admitted.

Attending a college rep visit is also a good way for astudent to gain information about a school he is potentially interested in tosee if it would be a good fit for him. This is one way of building or narrowinga college list to decide which schools to visit and ultimately to which toapply.

What are some questions to ask during a College Rep Visit?

It is helpful if the student does some research beforehand(the college’s website’s admissions page is a useful place to start) so he cansee what things he would like more information on. Some good areas forquestions are: admissions requirements, financial aid, scholarships, honorsprograms, majors, the potential for a double major, credit for IB and AP tests, housing, athletics, location, and student organizations and extracurricularactivities. A student might also ask about what sets the school apart fromother schools, whether its atmosphere is competitive or collaborative and aboutspecial admissions requirements for a program he is interested in, such asarchitecture, nursing or fine arts. Students should be enthusiastic, attentive, and respectful during college rep visits. Remember that you might be meetingthe person who will read your application.
