Rita Dominick '66

rita Rita Dominick is a life long Panther.  She is a member of the class of '66 and currently serves as Coordinator of Special Activities at Sandusky Central Catholic School which allows her the fun of reminiscing about high school days gone by while tending to her various responsibilities.

As a student, Rita's favorite teacher was Sr. Macaria.  "She was a great math teacher who had a lot of patience with those of us who didn't get it, and Tim Smith made US History interesting through his creative narratives of historical events" remembered Rita.  Rita was involved in yearbook and choral club and was a member of the high school musical cast all four years.  She also played intramural girls' basketball at a time when there were no athletic teams for girls, other than intramural sports and  cheerleading. Rita was an excellent student and made honor roll all four years while receiving a science award from the annual science fair.

"SMCC was special to me because the small size of the school made it easy to get to know all the students, not just those in my class.

The teachers cared about the students and were willing to help them succeed, much like today.  School spirit, aided by enthusiastic pep rallies and a newly-formed highly-spirited band, added to the enjoyment of high school," said Rita.

Following graduation Rita earned a degree in elementary education from St. John College in Cleveland, and later a Master's in Elementary Administration from the Univ. of Toledo.  Her entire professional career has been spent teaching and administering in Catholic education.  Eight of those years were spent as principal of a central city Catholic school in Toledo.  The student population was almost all non-Catholic minority students whose parents desired the same Catholic values as those of our SCCS Catholic families.  "I became very appreciative of the challenges these families faced in their desire to provide a quality faith-based education for their children," Rita said.

Being at SCCS and helping others with their faith is very important to Rita.  "Religious education at SMCC, combined with the influence of my mom and grandmother, have impacted my faith development, which has grown due to the importance of prayer in my life.    Prayer has made me aware of the presence of God each day through people and every day happenings.  It has kept me grounded during difficult times, and taught me to believe in the power of the Spirit," she said.

Rita has no plans to slow down anytime soon. "As I continue to work part time at Sandusky Central Catholic I witness the same dedication and desire on the part of our faculty to provide our students with a quality Catholic education that I benefitted from as a student.  The growth of faith values in our students along with their academic successes is testimony to the continued need for Catholic school education in our community.  The support of our SMCC alumni through time, talent, and treasure will do much to insure that the traditions of SMCC and our presence and service in the Sandusky area will continue for many years to come," Rita said proudly.
