The Sandusky Central Catholic School Education Foundation announced the establishment of the Abigail M. Bastien Scholarship. Representatives from Sandusky St. Mary High School, Perkins High School, the SCCS Education Foundation and the Bastien family joined to announce the scholarship.

Abby was a 2016 graduate of Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic High School (SMCC) and was entering her sophomore year at Johns Hopkins University where she was majoring in molecular and cell biology. Abby exemplified the characteristics SMCC strives for in educating students: Strengthening the Body, Challenging the Mind, and Enriching the Spirit. A stand-out track star at SMCC, Abby touched so many lives with her kindness and joy. She was driven and unselfishly gave her time to things she loved---her family, her friends, her faith, and those in need. On July 13, 2017 Abby passed away unexpectedly and on this day, February 1, 2018, we honor her memory with the establishment of the Abigail M. Bastien Scholarship Fund.

Respecting the previous gifts made in memory from Abby from Sandusky Central Catholic Schools and gifts from donors of Perkins High School, the SCCS Education Foundation will establish two scholarships named in Abigail Bastien’s memory.

SCCS President and Education Foundation Member Geoff Palmer spoke to the students and guests in attendance. “We are honored,” he said, “to be administering the Scholarships and managing donations that are added in the future. It is also our goal to continue to collaborate to bring more scholarship opportunities to students in our community. This new Sandusky Central Catholic School and Perkins collaboration is a wonderful way to honor the memory of Abby and to carry out all donor wishes."

Kelly Legando, Abby’s mother, spoke on behalf of the family. “Abby always had a smile on her face and was able to leave her mark wherever she went. She lived every single moment. We are honored to be establishing these scholarships because it means that Abby’s spirit will live on for years to come. We are eager to give them out to deserving senior student-athletes this spring.”

Seniors planning to attend a 4-year college will be eligible to apply for the scholarship. Applications are available from the Guidance Departments at Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic High School and Perkins High School. For more information about the Abigail M.
