This is the image for the news article titled Academic Team Takes 1stThe St. Mary Central Catholic High School Academic Team is having another great season.  The team traveled to Firelands College to square off against Norwalk St. Paul and New London. The Panthers came away with the victory scoring 37 points while New London was second with 32 and St. Paul was third.

Midway through the season, the Panthers are sitting in 5th place in total points.  The field consists of 18 area schools.  With two matches remaining, SMCC is in position to qualify for the playoffs which begin in February. The top 5 teams will advance to the playoffs.

Academic Challenge questions range from Current Events, Life Sciences, World History and American Literature to Great Books, and more.   Students meet during their lunchtime for about 30 minutes, three times a week.  With so little school time dedicated to the competition, a great deal of practice is through either personal study time or applying what they learn through their classes at SMCC.

This year's team members are:  Seniors - Blaise Gennari, Ben Gnage, Keegan Murray, Matt Ritzenthaler, and Jo Zhou.  Juniors are Abby Bastien, Jimmy Kaatz, Jake Kreidler, Rosie Murphy, and Ben Vargas.  The team advisors are Mrs. Kathryn Goff and Mrs. Sophia Jackson.
